CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

Submission Deadline: 28 February 2025

Guest editors:

Continuing with the aim of decolonising migration studies, we are calling colleagues working on migration and mobility in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) from multiple / interdisciplinary perspectives to contribute to a new, original collective work, which we have envisioned as a “Lexicon.” We aim at compiling and editing a critical glossary of terms, concepts, and notions based on the work, reflections, and findings of a plurality of migration and mobility researchers and activists, whose critical work, located in LAC, can contribute to wider, global discussions on the subject.

This Lexicon will be structured as an alphabetic glossary with textual, graphic, multimedia or mixed entries, based on the contributors’ original research. Each researcher (or group of researchers) is invited to suggest a term (ideally one word, and if necessary, a sematic expression). Each term, discussed in a short textual, graphic, or multimedia entry, will be used to suggest, provoke, and unsettle longstanding ideas on migration and mobility. As examples, we want to put together often discussed terms in the context of LAC such as caravan, trocha, care, territoriality, or struggle (among many others) which can add to the global conversation on migration and mobility.

The guidelines for the proposal are:

  • Each researcher or group of researchers can suggest one term / notion/ concept (ideally one word, or short expression if absolutely necessary)
  • They should include the type of contribution they are interested in, along the following guidelines:
    • Original textual contribution (around 1000 words)
    • Graphic contribution (Original, full resolution pieces with an accompanying text of up to 500 words – For a series of pieces please get in touch with the editors)
    • A multimedia piece (Original, audio or video files of up to 5 minutes with an accompanying text of up to 500 words)
  • All texts should be submitted in English. Graphic and multimedia contributions can include contents in any other language. However, the accompanying texts should be written in English.

The purpose of the editors is to compile the first version of the lexicon in English, as a working language. However, the editors have made progress in securing the publication of a translated version of the lexicon in Spanish. We are open to exploring other possibilities of translations into Portuguese, Haitian Creole, French or other languages with the authors.

The call for contributions will close on 28 February 2025. You are invited to submit your proposal to Mauricio.Palma-Gutierrez.1@warwick.ac.uk. If you would like to informally discuss your ideas beforehand with the editors, please let us know.
