Abstract

EXTERNALISATION: A set of strategies through which states extend the spatial reach of migration control beyond their territorial borders, managing and restricting human movement before it reaches their frontiers. Externalisation encompasses, and is underpinned by, the institutionalisation of (un)desirability and the management of worthiness. It is a co-produced, multi-scalar, and negotiated process.
