Editorial Note

Abstract

This issue presents four articles and a book review. Three articles form a special section, “Populisms, Hybrid Regimes and Political Change”, drawn from the first Leonardo Morlino Lecture Series, held at the Autonomous University of Querétaro, Mexico, in November 2019. In his introduction to the section, Professor Leonardo Morlino outlines its contributions: Juan Russo distinguishes polarization, radicalization and populism; Jaime Preciado sets liberal and critical approaches to populism against the concept of the hybrid regime; and Rafael Plancarte uses game theory to explain the consolidation of Mexico’s hybrid regime. The issue continues with Marcel Nagar’s analysis of developmental states in Africa and South Africa’s prospects after COVID-19, and Nkosingiphile Mkhize’s review of Robin Renwick’s book on state capture in South Africa. The note closes with a report on a journal publication workshop.
